Introduction
Technical Systems Design is a Power Electronic engineering company mostly involved in rolling-stock electrical & mechanical engineering for Locomotives and Trains. The company was founded in 2008 by an engineering team in Johannesburg South Africa. Since the beginning we have been custom designing and manufacturing specialized small run equipment for the Rolling stock, Industrial and Mining sectors, our offering typically include the design, prototype, type testing and batch manufacture of custom products.
How do you use Proteus in your working day ?
We have used Proteus to design all the electronics and electrical systems needed to modernise an entire 3kV electric locomotive. The job included a total of 81 PCBs designed in Proteus (35 unique designs).
Subsystems designed with Proteus include:
- A 100kW Static Inverter with IGBT chopper.
- a Driver Control & Dashboard Station.
- Full touch screen HMI.
In addition (although not the typical use for the software) we've become so comfortable with Proteus that we opted to design the full 55-page wiring diagram for the locomotive in Proteus.
The locomotive is used at Impala Platinum Mine in Rustenburg, South Africa. We have been using Proteus in various industrial and heavy-current projects since the early 90’s, including work on locomotives and trains, industrial rectifiers, battery chargers, high-frequency DC power supplies, and control-and-automation projects.
